Language Selection

Students´ Statements

Why should we learn a foreign language?

A new language opens up a whole new world. A foreign language gives us access to another culture, and our lives take on a new dimension. The great German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said: "Whoever is not acquainted with foreign languages knows nothing of his own."

(Vitaliy Novikov, Ukraine)

Have I ever been to another planet?

You see, I study foreign languages; thus, my answer is positive. Through this thorny way to the foreign communication skills, an ´alien´ absorbs the whole culture and assimilates on a totally different planet. Irreversible Conversion!

(Maryia Dubasava, Belarus)

When I imagine that the languages that I speak (Russian, English, German) are also spoken by 874 million people in 140 countries around the world, I get goose bumps. That means unlimited possibilities for shearing and widening my experience. Next goal Hebrew and Spanish, why not?!

(Olga Grozyeva, Germany)

In our globalizing world, young people should understand how crucial the language skills really are. As a student in an International Marketing and Management program, it is known that multinational corporations seek out to foreign markets. Besides the globalization and economic point of view, language skills help us to communicate to different cultures and it illustrates our thoughts.
There is a quote, which states that how many languages you know this many times you are a person. Our university offers us to learn two and even more languages, which helps us to grow towards being intelligent adults.

(Roberta Valtenberg, Estonia)

When I first got to know about the LBS, I was really excited about the possibility to develop my language skills. Now after 2 semesters of studying I can say that the first studies I've started to use are the languages. I am able to read books and magazines, communicate with new friends, watch movies and understand the football commentators.  I am looking forward to expand these to me important skills which I'm sure will have great value in my future career and life.

(Guy Elbaz, Israel)

In my opinion studying several foreign languages is very important.

No matter the field, communication is essential for personal and business life. This is only possible when language is not a barrier.

(Zsófia Ruszkai, Hungary)

"From my experience, talking to someone in his native language, whether it is in a business environment or even while travelling opens up the person in front of you and gives you an advantage in dealing with that person. Knowing the language is also a very important factor in understanding the cultural background of the people who use that language, for me knowing as many languages as possible is something that I think will help me very much in the future both in business and in personal life."

(Tal Miller, Israel)

There is hardly anything that influences personal image more than one´s  ability to communicate. A person´s manner of speaking gives a lasting impression of one´s personality. It is not surprising that good relationships are often founded on enjoyable conversations. Interestingly, a conversation is engaging when it implements effective expressions and deep understanding of the message communicated. Therefore, mastering the language of one´s counterpart is clearly an indispensible tool for every professional´s development.

(Lenka Šillerová, Slovakia )

As early as centuries ago people started to understand the importance of learning foreign languages. From that time on it was a tradition for the children in the family to speak one or two languages fluently in addition to their mother tongue. Today, in our world or rapid technological development and fast change the knowledge of foreign languages gained even bigger importance. It used to be that one was satisfied with knowing only his/her mother tongue and working in his/her country. Though, the times have changed and today we are living in the world of globalization in which it is impossible not to know foreign languages in order to achieve success. Thus, it is a great opportunity for us, the students of the Lauder Business School to be able to learn foreign languages in addition to business subjects. Moreover, those of us learning Hebrew as a foreign language, are given a unique opportunity to learn the language of our ancestors and come back to our roots.

(Olexandra Rivkina, Ukraine)

Communication is the human way of exchanging ideas and combining knowledge, talents and skills. Especially today, mastering foreign languages is vital to our collective need of setting up international business relationships. Foreign languages and communication techniques are an essential feature of both the professional as well as the recreational lives of the world population.

(Opher Ben Zvi, Israel)

Goethe seems to have mastered various arts, among them, the power to envision the future of language learning.

In the late 18th and early 19th century, a man was definitely ahead of his time to say that

"A man who does not know foreign language is ignorant of his own."

(Thyago Ohana, Brazil)

Everybody understands the significance of speaking foreign languages because it opens up  possibilities for using diverse resources, meeting different people and doing international business.

But most of us take it practically when we face a need for communication.

So try to start communicating earlier!

(Daniel Shulman, Russia)

Today we are witnesses of rapid economic changes around the world. People are more

involved in international communication  because of the effects of globalisation which is spreading with unbelievably great speed. That's why  studying languages is one of the most important future perspectives  people can invest in.

(Radoslav Konov, Bulgaria)

Possessing the ability to communicate in another language gives each individual the power to understand and negotiate with people from different countries. Also, in today’s business world the knowledge of various languages is required. Therefore, the possibility to study foreign languages in Lauder Business School is of great importance.

(Inara Binjaminova, Austria)

As many foreign languages you know, as many personalities you are.

Language is the only universal way of organizing expressions and passing ideas from one person to another. Study languages for being a real human.

(Pavel Faynberg, Russia)

Languages become more and more important in everyday life. Through languages people and future business partners get together more easily. Since I study at LBS, I improved my language knowledge not just in English, but also in Russian, French and Hebrew.

(Helmut Makagon, Austria)

Each and every language is one, new, open window to the world.

There is no doubt that languages are very important, this is not only way to communicate, but also to get closer to other people. I am studying all kinds of foreign languages since I was 5. Then I did not understand what the importance of knowing them was. 13 years later, one of them (English) opened a new door in front of me. Now I continue studying languages and I think that there will not be a day till the end of my life that I will say that I know one language - there will be always desire for knowing more and more.

How important is it to know a language these days?

I think it is everything! It does not matter if one is the greatest mathematician, businessman, physician if he/she speaks only one language, all these titles do have almost no meaning.

It is quite ridiculous to imagine the greatest businessman for example not to be  able to present his/her own presentation, products or companies – except in his/her native language.

Moreover, the more the better! Nowadays knowing one language is not enough. Each language is one step closer to success!

(Stella Ilel, Bulgaria)

Learning a new language is discovering a new world. When acquiring the knowledge of a new language you are able to learn new cultural, interpersonal and business relations. Coming to LBS and making me communicate in five different languages made me a more knowledgeable person and no doubt it will be precious for my future.

(Alan Weltman-Buch, Brazil)

Our major, Intercultural Business Administration, implies that we are being prepared to be managers in culturally diverse companies. To a large extent, I believe management is, outside professional skills of course, all about contacts and respect. Both contacts and respect are personal issues, and in order to get them one needs to speak the people's language. The more languages one speaks, the better chances he/she has in "speaking the people's language."
