On November 19, several of us LBS students (Ivana C., Danita M., Artem B., Mariia M., Irena K., Ori G., Andres S.) from the masters degree program IML 2014 undertook our first official visit to the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) Austria with our supervisors Prof. (FH) Mag. (FH) Miha and Prof. (FH) Dr. Pöschl. The aim of the visit was to set the ground for collaboration on a Student Consulting Project (SCP), recently assigned to us. The project’s objectives are to find potential industry applications and to prepare a commercialization plan for one of the recent IST technical inventions, namely the Commercialization Laminar Flow.

The visit began with a presentation by Dr. Kühnen (IST Austria), who introduced and familiarized us with the technical invention put in pipelines. Although we LBS students do not have in-depth knowledge of physics and fluid dynamics, we found a common language with the IST scientists and quickly grasped the main points. During the meeting, both sides clarified both the potentials and the limitations of the IST prototypes that make turbulent flows laminar, thereby saving energy and reducing pumping costs. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to agree on terms of collaboration and on next steps.

After the formal part of the meeting, Dr. Kühnen offered us a tour of the laboratories, lecture halls and campus premises. Eventually, we stayed in the cozy lounge with other IST Austria students and employees for a further chat, sharing a cup of coffee and enjoying the beautiful view of the campus pond.

Researching Real Estate Economics

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, has published a peer-reviewed article with the title “Concordance of office market cycles? Dynamics in European metropolises in the context of the financial and economic crisis”. The paper is joint work together with Robert Musil from the Austrian Academy of Sciences. It is published in the well-established, peer-reviewed German journal “Zeitschrift für Wirtschaftsgeographie”. The topic of the paper is strongly related to the LBS study program Strategic Finance & Business Analytics.
