Based on LBS’s growing involvement in the CEE eDem and eGov Conference network, we were able to convene a workshop examining Smart cities – Urban competitiveness and challenges of participation. The workshop was conjointly organized with GoForeSight Institute Ljubljana and Chuo University Tokyo. The preparatory and review process spanned members of LBS’s academic network from across the globe.

 

The workshop hosted panelists from Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Romania, among others. The talks shed light on aspects such as the Smartpolis Horizon 2020 project, inter- and intra-operability in smart cities, the use of smart data to improve urban competitiveness, modelling and evaluating smart cities performance, and fostering the smart principles in government. LBS visiting faculty Professor Adriana Zait of UAIC Iasi, Romania lectured on the role of civilizational competences in raising smart cities. Furthermore, LBS Professor Robert Braun presented his ongoing research on The Autonomous Vehicle Revolution: The wellbeing effects of driverless cars. The debates brought together intriguing perspectives from applied economic research, the technology sector, and policy-making.

 

This gathering of Smart City specialists in Budapest was yet another great opportunity for LBS to increase its network in the field of smart regional competitiveness.

The Economics of Climate Change

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, was invited by the Carinthian Economic Society (Volkswirtschaftliche Gesellschaft Kärnten) to deliver a talk on the economics of climate change. About 100 visitors attended the talk on October 3rd 2019 in Klagenfurt, Carinthia’s capital. Mr Reiner stressed the economic case for ambitious climate policy as well as the chances for business.

Master Class of 2019 – Congratulations!

On September 20, we were delighted to welcome many proud families and friends to the Lauder Business School campus for a Masters graduation ceremony. The ceremony started with a welcoming speech by our Executive Director Alexander Zirkler in the beautiful baroque LBS ballroom. In his address, he highlighted the international quality of both our Master programs and drew the parallel: “The value of your diplomas will increase in time like the value of a good painting.”
