Based on LBS’s growing involvement in the CEE eDem and eGov Conference network, we were able to convene a workshop examining Smart cities – Urban competitiveness and challenges of participation. The workshop was conjointly organized with GoForeSight Institute Ljubljana and Chuo University Tokyo. The preparatory and review process spanned members of LBS’s academic network from across the globe.

The workshop hosted panelists from Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Romania, among others. The talks shed light on aspects such as the Smartpolis Horizon 2020 project, inter- and intra-operability in smart cities, the use of smart data to improve urban competitiveness, modelling and evaluating smart cities performance, and fostering the smart principles in government. LBS visiting faculty Professor Adriana Zait of UAIC Iasi, Romania lectured on the role of civilizational competences in raising smart cities. Furthermore, LBS Professor Robert Braun presented his ongoing research on The Autonomous Vehicle Revolution: The wellbeing effects of driverless cars. The debates brought together intriguing perspectives from applied economic research, the technology sector, and policy-making.

This gathering of Smart City specialists in Budapest was yet another great opportunity for LBS to increase its network in the field of smart regional competitiveness.
