The Economics of Climate Change

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, was invited by the Carinthian Economic Society (Volkswirtschaftliche Gesellschaft Kärnten) to deliver a talk on the economics of climate change. About 100 visitors attended the talk on October 3rd 2019 in Klagenfurt, Carinthia’s capital. Mr Reiner stressed the economic case for ambitious climate policy as well as the chances for business.

Master Class of 2019 – Congratulations!

On September 20, we were delighted to welcome many proud families and friends to the Lauder Business School campus for a Masters graduation ceremony. The ceremony started with a welcoming speech by our Executive Director Alexander Zirkler in the beautiful baroque LBS ballroom. In his address, he highlighted the international quality of both our Master programs and drew the parallel: “The value of your diplomas will increase in time like the value of a good painting.”

Researching Real Estate Economics

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, has published a peer-reviewed article with the title “Concordance of office market cycles? Dynamics in European metropolises in the context of the financial and economic crisis”. The paper is joint work together with Robert Musil from the Austrian Academy of Sciences. It is published in the well-established, peer-reviewed German journal “Zeitschrift für Wirtschaftsgeographie”. The topic of the paper is strongly related to the LBS study program Strategic Finance & Business Analytics.

Cooperation Agreement with the City of Vienna

Lauder Business School signed a cooperation agreement with the City of Vienna together with 22 other Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences located in Vienna. On May 14, 2019, Mayor Michael Ludwig signed a cooperation agreement with the Viennese higher education institutions in the City Hall, together with rectors, directors and board members of 23 universities, colleges and universities of applied sciences.

Researching Innovation in Austria

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, has co-authored the “Austrian Research and Technology Report 2019”. This annual report has been published by three Austrian ministries and written by external experts from applied research institutes and universities. Given the importance of the report for the wider public, it is an honour to contribute to this official publication.

LBS meets Ben Gurion University in Israel

From December 9 to December 13 Prof. (FH) Mag. Julius Dem, MBA, Director of the BA studies, participated in the Ben Gurion University (BGU) staff week in Israel. The stay was funded by Erasmus+ K107 and the goal of this trip was to further strengthen Lauder Business School’s already close relationship with BGU, get to know representatives of other (European) universities, learn from best practice, and share common experiences with LBS’s Israeli and European partners.

How Firms Innovate

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, published a book chapter on firm innovation together with Katerina Vrtikapa. The paper is a chapter in the book “Umkämpfte Technologien. Arbeit im digitalen Wanel”, edited by the „Beirat für gesellschafts-, wirtschafts- und umweltpolitische Alternativen“ (BEIGEWUM).

Blockchain Education with Insticore & FH Technikum

On October 23, FH Technikum and Insticore announced integration between the two academic environments to streamline a complete blockchain education program in Vienna. The experience and status of FH Technikum as a top-provider of technical education in Austria, and the business and economic background of Insticore, incubated by the Lauder Business School, allows the two to carry out a complete blockchain program for those interested in becoming experts in this new technology.

Companies Going Global

Dr. Christian Reiner, Senior Researcher at LBS, gave a presentation on the internationalization of firms at a seminar for Austrian teachers at secondary schools on 12.October 2018. The seminar was organized by the Institut für Österreichkunde and the Österreichische Geographische Gesellschaft.
Firms with international activities, i.e. exports and/or foreign direct investment, are quite distinct from firms with no international orientation. In addition, exports are heavily concentrated; a small share of exporters account for a large share of exports.

Celebrating 15 years of LBS with Ambassador Lauder

On October 9, 2018 we were honored to welcome our Founder and President Ambassador Ronald S. Lauder and celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Lauder Business School! A Story of an LBS intern

We are happy to report on one of our successful internships by bachelor graduate Gioia Stanisavljevic as part of the LBS International Business Administration program. Gioia worked as a Management Trainee at LKW WALTER for the past six months and her experience was very rewarding.

As she explains in the interview: „I was relatively quickly allowed to participate operationally in the France-Czech Republic department, and have already supported the Division Manager, processed orders and even done some scheduling. As a part of the program I also attended the traineeship courses, where I got more of an inside knowledge regarding the logistics and transport itself.”

The (new) power of firms

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at LBS, has co-authored with Christian Bellak, Professor of economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, three blogposts on the new power of firms in Europe and in the US. The three essays (in German) are now available as a Working Paper No 4 as part of the LBS working paper series.

Insticore Brings Us the Future

Lauder Business School is delighted to introduce the start-up Insticore, the first future-tech academy in Austria. To start off their venture, Insticore will focus on blockchain and artificial intelligence education, with further prodigious plans and ideas in the pipeline. LBS as incubator is excited to expand its activities by following the latest trends in technology. “We see the intertwining of business and the newest technology as one of our long-term goals”, explains the LBS Executive Director Alexander Zirkler.

New Special Issue published

The rising power of firms is a major topic for economists and business scholars. While managers try to gain market power by applying several (legal and sometimes even illegal) strategies, society may suffer from welfare losses and higher inequality as a result. While these issues are more discussed in the US than in Europe, an increasing number of publications are devoted to the analysis of corporate power and its consequences within Europe.

Guest Lecturer from the Hotel Sacher Vienna

On May 24, 2018 we had the privilege to host external lecturer Ms Larissa Dauchner, who works in the field of brand management in the Hotel Sacher Marketing Department. As part of the Statistics for Economics and Business 2 course led by our Senior Researcher Dr. Christian Reiner, our bachelor students had the opportunity to hear her firsthand experience and learn about use and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in the development of the Hotel Sacher’s marketing strategy and operations.

LBS Research and the Third Mission

Publications and presentations are important output of applied economic research at Lauder Business School. Depending on the audience and type of journal, the aim can be either to participate in the scientific debate or to inform the wider public of new research results and discuss its social relevance.

Furtenbach is a chemical company and its core business lies in the field of resins and coatings. It is the third largest company in Europe in its branch. Just to provide a snapshot on its relevance, there is at least one element in every vehicle that was manufactured with the help of its final products.

The product landscape of the 2030 supermarket

Winkelbauer GmbH, an Austrian medium-size company which specializes in distributing premium international nutrition brands in Austria, requested support of the Lauder Business School to analyze the development of retailable produce in Austria. Winkelbauer GmbH would like to include the findings and results of this project in their future marketing concepts.

On April 18, 2018, we were privileged to host Dr. Florian Koschat, the CEO of Pallas Capital Advisory AG as part of the Fireplace Talks at Lauder Business School. During the session, Dr. Koschat gave insight into his company operations, his personal path to success and a very strong motivational speech for our students.

Dr. Harel’s Exchange Week at LBS

Dr. Ronen Harel from the Department of Business Administration of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev visited LBS from April 16 to April 20 as part of the Erasmus+ lecturer exchange program. The purpose of his visit was to shadow LBS lecturers and implement best practices in his home institution.

LBS Senior Researcher invited to join economic research group

Dr. Christian Reiner, Senior Researcher at LBS, was invited to join a research group on “Oligopoly, Stagnation and Power” at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. The research group consists of approx. ten economic researchers from different institutional backgrounds aiming to explore possible futures of capitalism while taking into account the rising concentration in a large number of markets, the resulting higher power of firms, slow economic growth and the possible relationships between these phenomena.

President of the National Bank of Austria visits LBS

On March 15, 2018, we were privileged to host Dkfm. Dr. Claus J. Raidl, President of the National Bank of Austria (OeNB – Österreichische Nationalbank) as part of the Fireplace Talks at Lauder Business School. During the session, Dr. Raidl offered insights into the OeNB’s mandate, its decision-making bodies, the tasks of the central bank as well as the current challenges facing the OeNB and the EU.

New Internationalization Project at LBS

As of January 2018, Lauder Business School is partner in the MA23-funded project „[email protected] relaunched“ which was initiated by the project coordinator, the University of Applied Sciences Vienna for Management and Communication (FH Wien der WKW). New Graduate Research Assistant at LBS

We are happy to announce that Clemens Weisgram, Master student of our Banking, Finance and Compliance (BFC) program, was appointed as the new Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) at Lauder Business School. In the forthcoming spring term, he will work together with Dr. Christian Reiner, Senior Researcher at LBS, on research projects in the field of real estate economics. The projects are part of an ongoing research cooperation between the LBS and the Institute for Urban and Regional Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

New research projects at LBS

Christian Reiner, senior researcher at the Lauder Business School, is participating in two recent contract research projects and has published a new paper. The first research project, a project with the centre for Social Innovation (ZSI), is financed by the Austrian Wirtschaftsservice (AWS). The aim is to evaluate and provide suggestions for improving the ex-ante project evaluation scheme of AWS. The project deals with the allocation of public subsidies for private companies, especially but not exclusively start-ups.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise Recruiting at LBS

On November 30, 2017 representatives from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) visited Lauder Business School as part of the LBS Career Center activities to present their Sales Graduate Program and meet the best LBS students. HPE Sales Manager Michael Dornheim and Graduate Account Manager Dennis Heumann introduced the digital disruption and transformation era and explained how HPE as a company is responding to these challenges with their solutions, products and services.

LBS Senior Researcher at the Austrian National Bank

On November 27, 2017, Dr. Christian Reiner, Senior Researcher at Lauder Business School, participated in a workshop at the Austrian National Bank on economic education in Austrian schools. This workshop was part of the conference “Wirtschaftliche Allgemeinbildung hat Zukunft: 55 Jahre Geographie und Wirtschaftskunde“, organized by the University of Vienna. In particular, Dr. Reiner was asked to discuss the topic of macroeconomics together with other experts in one of the several workshops.

New LBS Working Paper

The LBS Working Paper Series “LBS Working Papers” aims at presenting applied research completed by LBS faculty, outstanding graduates and partners. Topics include subjects taught and researched at LBS’s degree programs (1) International Business Administration, (2) International Management and Leadership (3) and Banking, Finance and Compliance. Successful master graduates will be invited to publish condensed versions of their theses.

LBS Best & Brightest

Lauder Business School honors its most accomplished students with a bestowal of the Director’s List. The Director’s List is a type of scholarship that recognizes the achievement of Bachelor and Master students semester by semester. In order to be eligible for the Director’s List, students must have a semester GA of 1.25 or below (based on first exam attempts with a minimum of 25 examined ECTS in the respective semester). In recognition of the extraordinary academic achievement in the spring term 2016/2017, two master students have been placed on the Director’s List — congratulations to Ramona SCHILLEIN (IML 2016; GA: 1.17) and Katharina HÖFLER (IML 2016, GA: 1,25)!

Welcome Day at LBS

On September 26, 2017 Lauder Business School was pleased to welcome 120 new bachelor and master students. Our freshers had the opportunity to participate in a series of welcoming and orientation presentations in the morning, as well as in an informal Welcome reception in the afternoon, where they could network with the faculty, administration staff, current LBS students and LBS alumni.

„Marketing on a shoestring – How to deliver big results with small resources”

As part of the 2017 Erasmus+ staff mobility, Ivana Cvetkovic, LBS marketing assistant, had the opportunity to attend a seminar in Bonn, Germany organized by the GATE (Germany Internationales Hochschulmarketing) from August 30-31. The seminar was led by Joachim Ekström, Chair of the European Association for International Education (EAIE), and responsible for international marketing and recruiting at Uppsala University in Sweden.

What are Student Consulting Projects (SCP)?

SCP projects are 8-month project collaboration (October-May) between corporate or not-for-profit clients, LBS advanced master students and qualified LBS faculty members. They are intended to assist local corporations, entrepreneurs and also non-profits with typical business issues.

I teach three courses: Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, and Performance Management. In anything I do I like the holistic approach. My teaching method demands seeing the whole picture and then trying to convey an understanding of individual subjects that is firmly anchored in a holistic awareness of reality. On May 10, 2017, Raiffeisen Private Banking Team Leader Mag. Anna Katharina Marx, EFA®, visited the BFC16 class as part of the Banking Products and Services course taught by Ing. Mag. Robert Kotal CFP®EFA. LBS students had the unique opportunity to gain insights into the daily business of Raiffeisen Private Banking and learn about satisfying clients with high levels of income or sizable assets.

IML Students “Going Global” with TOPSIM®

On May 8 and 9, the International Management and Leadership 2015 cohort participated in the “Going Global” business simulation organized by Lauder Business School and TOPSIM®. The “Going Global” game can be described as a flight simulator for managers based on the “learning business by doing business” principle. The challenge for students is to make decisions as a team, i.e. to decide on the type, scope and direction of their company expansion on its way to become a global player.

IÉSEG School of Management visiting LBS

On April 25, 2017, IÉSEG School of Management, one of the leading business schools in France, visited Lauder Business School with the aim to exchange daily practice and processes regarding student services, staff management, research and library facilities. Our visitors’ goal was to develop a strategy for the coming 10 years, and for this purpose they visited Austrian companies, universities, and business schools.

BFC15: TODAY WE ARE MANAGING A BANK!

On April 24 and 25, 2017, the Banking, Finance and Compliance 2015 cohort had a chance to participate in a Universal Banking simulation organized by Lauder Business School and TOPSIM®. The purpose of the simulation was for students to emulate “a flight simulator for managers”, based on a learning-by-doing approach.

LBS Students at the Long Night of Companies

On March 22, LBS students participated in the Long Night of Companies 2017 career event. 40 companies took part in the event this year, opening their doors to interested students. Some of the prominent companies included: Accenture, Allianz, Bank Austria, Deloitte, Erste Group, E&Y, H&M, Lidl, Hofer, Nespresso, Nestle, pwc, REWE international, T-Mobile and many more.

LBS at the cutting edge of contract law

Contracts are an essential part of our everyday life, which underscores the important role of contract law within jurisprudence. Against this background, Prof. (FH) Dr. Armin Kammel, LL.M., MBA, who teaches several financial law courses in the Banking, Finance, and Compliance Program (BFC) at Lauder Business School, co-designed a new, innovative and practitioner-oriented book series on „Vertragsrecht und Vertragsgestaltung“(contract law and contract design).

Design Thinking Day at LBS

On Tuesday, March 21, IML 2016 class had a day dedicated to Design Thinking and New Product Development (NPD) as part of their Creativity and Innovation Course with Dr. Stephan Jung. During the session, students were encouraged to come up with original ideas to either create innovation or to focus on problem solving of a particular issue and thereby satisfy a certain need.

Vienna remains the No. 1 for Quality of Living

According the results of the Annual Mercer Quality of Life Survey, which compares 231 cities by evaluating various quality-of-life factors (including healthcare, education, infrastructure, housing and environment), Vienna maintained its top ranking in 2017.

The Institute for Advanced Studies (Institut für Höhere Studien, IHS) (link to http://www.ihs.ac.at/) developed a modular curriculum as part of the European project HEIRRI: Higher Education Institutions & Responsible Research and Innovation. Austria introducing a Start-up Visa

The Austrian government has proposed easier visa regulations for start-up founders coming from non-EU countries. Secretary of State Mahrer suggested that entrepreneurs will be granted a residence and work permit for two years if all the prerequisites are met.

Public Discussion on Neoliberalism

Dr. Christian Reiner, our Senior Researcher at Lauder Business School will participate in a public discussion on economic policy in Austria and Germany since the 1970s as a guest speaker. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 7 at 18:30 in the specialist bookshop of the ÖGB publisher (Fachbuchhandlung des ÖGB Verlags), located in Vienna in Rathausstraße 21.

LBS alumna researching Social Entrepreneurship in Austria

LBS alumna Andrea Gegö (IML 2014) completed her master thesis on social entrepreneurship in Austria titled “Unravelling the Reality of the Austrian Social Entrepreneurs while Looking for Solutions in Tailored Educational Programs” under the supervision of Prof. Mag. Robert Schwertner, working for the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft, FFG).

LBS concluded a MoU with Bar-Ilan University

Lauder Business School concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bar-Ilan University which sets the path for future staff and student mobility. Bar-Ilan University is the fastest-growing institution of higher education in Israel and offers BA, MA and PhD degrees on an award-winning campus near Tel Aviv.

Young Israeli Leaders visiting Lauder Business School

On December 1, 2016, Lauder Business School hosted a Young Israeli Leaders Delegation consisting of 30 participants working for various organizations in the public and private sector in Israel. The purpose of this visit was to introduce Lauder Business School to the leaders of tomorrow and to identify potential areas of cooperation. The delegation was accompanied by Dr. Teresa Indjein and Dr. Markus Benesch from the Cultural and Integration Sections of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, as well as Dr. Susanne Keppler-Schlesinger, the Deputy Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.

LBS and IDC Herzliya have signed a Memorandum of Understanding

Lauder Business School (LBS) and Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set the basis for their student, staff and lecturer exchange in the frame of Erasmus+. Thus, IDC Herzliya is the second Israeli institution that LBS is intending to collaborate with very closely, the first being Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

Guest Lecturers in the BFC Classrooms

Ing. Mag. Robert Kotal CFP®EFA®, professor in the Banking, Finance and Compliance (BFC) master’s degree program at Lauder Business School, invited two guest lecturers to contribute their professional expertise to his teaching sessions. On November 21, 2016, Mag. Leopold Quell, Senior Fund Manager at Raiffeisen Capital Management and a Certified Portfolio Manager (CPM) gave a lecture as part of the Financial Instruments and Trading course. He has been a fund manager for 16 years and become a specialist for managing funds in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Urban attraction policies

Lauder Business School is proud to announce that our Senior Researcher Dr. Christian Reiner has published a new paper in the international and prestigious Journal “Cities” (impact factor 2.051). As the lead author, he wrote the article together with Susanne Meyer from the Austrian Institute of Technology and Sascha Sardadvar from WPZ Research, Vienna. The paper compares attraction policies for academic talent of two highly developed Central European metropolitan cities. The authors have developed a heuristic framework in order to analyse political actions that aim at attracting international academic talents.

Lauder Business School has been certified by the AQ Austria

Lauder Business School is very proud to announce that we have been accredited and certified by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria (AQ). The first preparatory talks with the agency started in 2015 and it took approximately 1.5 years for the procedure to be completed.

This rigorous process is required by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education for every Higher Education Institution in Austria, involving an external auditing committee (4 auditors from different universities and one student) that reviews and certifies the institution’s internal quality management system (QMS).

Based on LBS’s growing involvement in the CEE eDem and eGov Conference network, we were able to convene a workshop examining Smart cities – Urban competitiveness and challenges of participation. The workshop was conjointly organized with GoForeSight Institute Ljubljana and Chuo University Tokyo. The preparatory and review process spanned members of LBS’s academic network from across the globe.

BFC Master Students Field Trip in Looshaus & Raiffeisen Private Banking

In April 2016 16 students of Lauder visited the venerable “Looshaus” in the heart of Vienna which also is the home of Raiffeisen Private Banking as part of the MBFC course “Banking products and services”. This field trip was a great contribution to both students learning and course enjoyment.
